German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced his nation is to purchase an additional 20 Eurofighter Typhoon jets in addition to the 38 aircraft already in its order pipeline.

The aircraft will be  ordered before the end of the current legislative session (scheduled for autumn 2025), underpinning Germany’s commitment to NATO in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We want a strong aerospace industry in Germany and Europe. This includes planning security in the defence industry. That is why we are ensuring reliable orders,” elaborated the Chancellor on social media.

“Today’s announcement from the German government is great news for the Eurofighter programme and our industry partners,” explained Eurofighter CEO Giancarlo Mezzanatto, who added that the order “underlines Germany’s long-term commitment to the Eurofighter”.

The German Air Force currently operates 138 Eurofighters, having received its first unit back in 2003.
