GE Aerospace has signed the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Defence Aviation Net Zero Charter, which sets out why climate change and sustainability is important to the defence aviation sector and how it will contribute to the UK’s Net Zero ambition.

The signing took place at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) on Friday 19 July and was overseen by Scott Keating, Regional GM, Sales and Business Development Europe for Defence Systems with GE Aerospace and Air Vice Marshall Shaun Harris CBE, Director Support and Chief Engineer Royal Air Force (RAF).

“This marks a significant step forward in our efforts to collaborate and share best practices with our partners to ensure that defence aviation positively contributes to the Government’s Net Zero ambitions and the Royal Air Force’s goal to achieve Net Zero by 2040,” said Keating, speaking at the signing.

Amy Gowder, President and CEO, Defense & Systems with GE Aerospace, also underlined her enthusiasm for the partnership and the role it plays in supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions. “By collaborating with our partners and sharing best practices, we aim to advance technology innovations that reduce emissions while enhancing the effectiveness of defence aviation operations.”

The Charter will see GE work alongside other partners to improve operational effectiveness and support the MOD efforts in the Defence Aviation Net Zero Strategy, which sets out the potential risks to defence activity alongside a clear and robust framework by which to mitigate any potential impacts. “Defence Aviation must be able to retain its ability to operate globally, to defend the UK and its all changing climatic environment whilst also significantly reducing our own carbon emissions,” added Shaun Harris.
