Expleo has announced the development of ExpleoLissa, an intelligent and adaptable software solution for the payload that equips nanosatellites and is designed to be compatible with the CubeSat 3U.
Expleo engineers optimize on-board computing capabilities by guaranteeing very low energy consumption. This allows the nanosatellite to carry out protective missions that can be reconfigured in orbit, at any time, thanks to an update by radio frequency transmission.
For example, a nanosatellite launched to monitor wind farms can change missions in flight to be used for wildlife monitoring or search and rescue in a difficult-to-access area. ExpleoLissa has been designed to support a wide range of situations and find applications in the fields of environment, civil security, humanitarian, etc. Thus, the solution developed by Expleo engineers and technicians makes it possible to extend the life of a nanosatellite by limiting its planned obsolescence.

Joseph Lasante, vice president and global head of defence and space at Expleo, commented: “The NewSpace revolution is essentially about putting space exploration and surveillance capabilities into the hands of more people. With ExpleoLissa, we prove that nanosatellites can provide the processing needed for complex applications, making nanosatellite constellations viable for a much wider user audience.
“The lessons we will learn from our first launch of ExpleoLissa will help us define new use cases in sectors as varied as energy and utilities, automotive, aeronautics and space. We look forward to working with our partners and customers to explore the possibilities offered by this technology.”
The operational engineering model of ExpleoLissa is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the first launch test carried out in 2024.
ExpleoLissa relies on the expertise and capabilities provided by Expleo engineers during the development of the Expleo Nanosatellite for Solar-irradiance Observation (ENSO) nanosatellite, which is scheduled for launch in 2023.
