Dassault Systèmes will be inviting FIA Connect delegates to join them on July 23 at 8am and 3pm (BST) for their See The Future: Immersive Virtual Demonstrations.
The event will feature live studio presenters using the Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform and some augmented reality to present a scenario addressing how to build resilient operations through the insertion of agile and sustainable innovations.
The session draws on insights gained from leading Aerospace and Defence companies which have used the platform to boost innovation, productivity and profitability. The 90‐minute session will cover how to foster supply chain collaboration, manage complex systems, design for flexible manufacturing and deliver high performance operations.
FINN editor Katherine Simmons caught up with Dominique Anderson at Dassault Systèmes for a taster of what delegates can expect from the immersive virtual demonstrations.
Can you describe how technologies such as augmented reality used by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform will help FINN Connect’s audience to look into the future?
DA: “To help extend the visualisation and comprehension that you get from 3D, we will be adding augmented reality amongst our speakers as they’re telling their stories. Remote guests will be able to see 3D at various points of the story where it’s relevant to bring it to life: such as certain elements of an assembly line or the factory it’s running in.”
“A lot of what we do at Dassault Systèmes can be highly technical. In many cases, it is rocket science. Let’s consider something relatively simple, beyond aerospace, like pasta. Pasta itself is quite simple, but customers have to develop and distribute it. The packaging and distribution is a highly complex activity to manage, and they do that with our platform, just as our aerospace customers more efficiently manage their complex processes. We aim to master the complexity of all aspects of business so our customers can be more successful.”
The aerospace industry is going through rapid change with many airlines and suppliers reducing operations as they seek to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. What benefits and advantages will digital virtual technologies such as the 3DEXPERIENCE platform bring to the industry during this crucial recovery period?
DA: “During the demonstration we will be showing the power of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to help facilitate collaboration between different organisations across the company or across the supply chain, so that they have the right information at the right time and can make better informed decisions.”
“The platform is able to collect information from all types of sources, aggregate that together and provide a visual context, making that information relevant so that you know what you’re deciding on or who you need to contact, and making that information actionable to make the right decision. The focus is about empowering our customers to resolve problems.”
“The 3DExperience platform has allowed many of our customers, in fact our entire company, to continue performing and functioning well, throughout the current global crisis, keeping our people connected with the right information. The platform supports the entire operations of an organisation, Human Resources uses it, our Research & Development team and our sales and marketing teams.”
“Suppliers and OEMs can work together and design for more flexible and efficient manufacturing. Manufacturers will be able to evaluate alternative strategies with “what if” scenarios and capacity planning to manage market demand more efficiently.”
“During this pandemic period, we have also offered our simulation expertise to airlines and airports operators in order to rebuild passenger confidence. Our simulation tools are used by commercial airframers to assess the circulation of airflow in the cabin and to redefine the safe procedures that are needed to ensure safe flight. We can also run air flow simulations within confined environment, such as an airport, and analyse what zones are not covered by air flow by the ventilation and redesign these to ensure passenger safety.”
“Many people don’t often think of Dassault Systèmes when thinking about ongoing product operations. For example, making sure an aircraft remains operational will help airlines be ready once we get back to flying. The MRO segment hasn’t slowed down much and has actually had more work to do because they have many more aircraft sitting on the ground to keep ready for flight operations, which is a more very complex situation today. Dassault Systèmes has solutions to model and optimise materials, processes and resources for greater agility when plans change.”
For the long term, what benefits will there be for companies using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform?
“Many companies were discussing resiliency prior to the current crisis; the pandemic has heightened awareness on this topic. It’s about being ready for the next big change. Improving performance through sustainability and the ability to drive innovation, whether that’s product development or organisational performance, remain key imperatives.”
“The 3DEXPERIENCE platform helps customers create ‘virtual universes’ so they can model the entire product experience, determine its impact on sustainability and identify areas for innovation, such as how to more effectively integrate new technologies, new systems, or new ways of working.”
“Having a virtual environment allows you to drive that innovation more effectively and evaluate its effectiveness. There are also opportunities for new found efficiency using a virtual world not only for your products, but to optimize your entire organisation as well, with a strategic approach known as a ‘model-based enterprise (MBE).’”
“Many companies have been born out of the industrial process over the last 100 years and are typically structured in silos. Passing information from one department to another in a typically sequential process. With a model-based enterprise, you can adapt the organisation to better execute its mission in having the right information with the right people at the right time, and in context.”
Can you give examples of who is already using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform in the aerospace and defence sectors?
DA: “We have Airbus and Boeing, Embraer, Saab Aerospace, and there’s a whole group of startups as well.
“We have major equipment and engine suppliers including the Safran companies all the way through to the smaller organisations that may be producing various components on a build to order approach.”
“One of the things we will illustrate during our event is the value of increased collaboration throughout the supply chain. Many suppliers can and want to contribute to the innovation and development of the overall project and programme they’re involved in. One of the things that we show in our scenario is how to develop a value network. How can a supplier become more active and create more value, not only for himself but for the buyer?”
“The platform allows all stakeholders involved to understand the impact of change, with a more comprehensive understanding of the proposal, so it may be easier to review and potentially integrate proposed innovations from other areas.”
“That facilitates the opportunity to provide more value from the supplier perspective as well, which is a win-win for everybody. If the supplier knows that they can contribute and drive innovation, either through the process or the product, the OEM can win from that as well.”
What are you looking forward to at FIA Connect?
“We’ve been to Farnborough International Airshow for the last few editions. It’s always a pleasure to meet customers and prospects and we get to show them the platform’s capabilities on a very personalised basis.”
“For these two open events on July 23rd, we hope to see a broad audience. We look forward to re-connecting with the FIA Connect audience as is we were back in Farnborough, face-to-face. We also look forward to hearing what our guests have to say, learning more about what they want to achieve.”
“We enjoy being able to align our capabilities and value to help them achieve their ambitions. It’s very satisfying personally. So we hope to be able to continue that kind of drive and connection through FIA Connect and maintain that, even through a remote, virtual environment.”
