The American Airlines Education Foundation is providing nearly $1 million in scholarship funds to 340 students who are dependents of the airline’s team members, as it seeks to help ease the cost of higher education.
Scholarships fund full-time, undergraduate study at any accredited college, university or vocational program worldwide.
Each recipient was awarded a $2,500 scholarship, and 100 first-generation college students each received an additional $1,000 award for the 2023–2024 school year.
“This year our scholarship recipients continue to raise the bar — consistently establishing ambitious goals and striving to excel in their chosen fields of study,” said Ron DeFeo, American’s chief marketing and communications officer and president of the Education Foundation.
“We take great pride in supporting our team members and their families, as they work toward reaching new heights throughout life’s journey.”
Recipients of this year’s scholarship
Recipients of this year’s scholarships live in eight countries: United States, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, England, Jamaica, Peru and Spain.
They are dependents of team members employed by American and its wholly owned carriers Envoy, PSA and Piedmont In 70 cities around the world.
Last year, the foundation helped some 452 students who were dependents of the airline’s team members with its largest donation to date of more than $1.2 million for the 2022–2023 school year.
Financial results
It comes after American Airlines Group reported its second-quarter 2023 financial results, including record quarterly revenue of $14.1bn, a 4.7% increase year over year.
“It was another fantastic quarter for American, driven by the hard work of our team to deliver a reliable operation for our customers and the continued strong demand for our product,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom.
“Our operation is performing at historically strong levels, and we have worked to refresh our fleet and build a comprehensive global network, all of which helped to produce record revenues in the second quarter. We will build on this momentum the rest of the year and continue to prioritize reliability, profitability, accountability and strengthening our balance sheet.”
