Airbus could be forced to axe the A380 if it does not secure a deal with the programme’s main customer, Emirates.

Airbus failed to land an agreement with Emirates at Dubai Airshow in November last year. However, the companies are “still talking”, Airbus says.

During a press conference today, John Leahy, Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer, said: “Quite honestly, if we can’t work out a deal with Emirates, I think there is no choice but to shut down the programme.”

Hopeful

He acknowledged that Emirates “are probably the only one to have the ability right now on the marketplace to take a minimum of six per year on a period of eight to 10 years.”

“I’m hopeful that we’ll work out a deal with Emirates, and others can add airplanes on top of that,” Leahy added.

There have been 317 orders for the A380 since its launch in 2007.
