Low-cost long-haul carrier Norse Atlantic Airways has signed a firm wet lease agreement with India’s largest airline, IndiGo, to provide a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The agreement marks another step in IndiGo’s expansion, particularly as the airline eyes additional long-haul routes.
The wet lease deal follows Norse Atlantic’s stock exchange announcement on 29 November 2024, which confirmed a letter of intent (LOI) for wet lease agreements involving six aircraft with an undisclosed international airline.
With this latest agreement, Norse will supply one aircraft to IndiGo for an initial period of six months starting in March 2025. The contract includes the possibility of an extension of up to 18 months, pending regulatory approvals.
Both airlines are exploring further collaboration, including the potential for additional aircraft leases in the future.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline by passenger numbers and fleet size, has been focused on expanding its operations beyond domestic and regional routes. In 2024, the airline carried more than 113 million passengers, making it one of the largest carriers in Asia and globally. To support its long-haul ambitions, IndiGo has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, with an option for an additional 70. Deliveries for the A350s are set to begin in 2027.
The addition of Norse Atlantic’s Boeing 787 will allow IndiGo to bridge the gap until its A350 fleet enters service, providing an immediate solution to its growing international network needs.
“This contract represents an important milestone for Norse as we partner with one of the largest and most reputable airlines in the world. We look forward to support IndiGo’s long haul services, and to deliver an exceptional travel experience to their customers,” said Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO and founder of Norse Atlantic Airways.
