Kearney optimistic about recognition of women in aerospace industry
Speaking to Aerospace Global News, Sarah Matar, partner at global management consulting firm Kearney, highlighted her optimism in the increased recognition women are continuing to receive within the aerospace and defence industry.
“A lot of women do not even consider [this industry] as an option,” explained Matar, pointing out that those who do pursue higher education and the requisite skillsets are still “often a minority, even at the educational level”.
The aerospace and defence industries are a key area of focus for Kearney, which focuses on many different functions: “from strategy to procurement, big transformation projects, leadership change and management, and many other functions as well”. Through the company’s study of the sector, Matar revealed that she is “very optimistic by the programmes that are set by the defence industry to encourage women to join” and further encouraged by “bold, louder, more confident” next generation of females indicating their interest in the sector.
Of the “many women who are trailblazers in the industry,” Matar highlighted two key trends. First of all, these women put in the time and the effort to become really, really good at what they do – they know the people, the industry… they are technically brilliant,” she explains. However, they also “set their vision. They know where they want to get, and they make it a point to say where they want to get,” she continued.
“Just by showing a successful example, I think it’s encouraging to other women who are interested in this industry,” concluded Matar; noting the importance of mentoring and support in forging lasting skillsets.
