Singapore begins Changi Terminal 5 construction

Singapore has broken ground on Terminal 5 at Changi Airport, a mega terminal that is set to significantly boost the city-state’s aviation capacity.
Designed to cater for around 50 million passengers annually in its initial phase, the terminal is expected to come online by the mid-2030s. Terminal 5 will be connected to Changi’s existing terminals.
As part of the development, the Singapore Airlines Group will consolidate operations at T5, having previously operated across three terminals. Additional space at the terminal and across the wider Changi complex will also allow other carriers to expand their presence.
Connectivity will be a major focus of the new development, Changi says. T5 will be the first terminal at Changi to feature a dedicated ground transport centre, integrating train, bus, taxi, and other transport services.
Future MRT extensions to the Thomson-East Coast Line and Cross Island Line are also planned to link T5 directly with the city and other regional hubs.
“Our vision is for T5 to be mega yet cosy, a terminal that embraces the Changi DNA – delivering a personalised, stress free and positively surprising airport experience. As a new gateway to Singapore, T5 offers new possibilities and will bring new surprises. It will offer yet another vibrant space for families, friends and the airport community to gather and bond,” said Mr Yam Kum Weng, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group.
The design was created by a team led by KPF Associates, working with Heatherwick Studio and architects61. Development work was paused in 2020 during the pandemic but resumed in 2022.
Terminal 5 is part of the larger 1,080-hectare Changi East development, which also includes the Changi East Industrial Zone (CEIZ) and the Changi East Urban District (CEUD).
