Seattle-Tacoma International Airport continues to be affected by a systems outage, with the Port of Seattle – the airport’s operator – stating that these indicate “a possible cyberattack”.
Disruption started three days ago on 24 August, with a statement confirming that “the Port of Seattle, including SEA Airport, is experiencing an internet and web systems outage, which is impacting some systems at the airport”. Passengers were advised to use airline apps to obtain digital boarding passes and bag tags before arriving at the airport.
A statement the following day added that while “teams continue to make progress on returning systems to normal operations… there is not an estimated time for return,” adding that in-terminal screens are also experiencing technical issues in displaying flight information.
With the airport’s apps and website down, airlines using common-use check-in counters and gates (including Frontier Spirit, Sun Country, JetBlue and international carriers) are particularly affected, explained an airport representative, as are the screens that display current waiting times. However, “at this point checkpoint lines are not problematic for us… because the lines that we do have typically are on the ticket counter,” he added.
