Robinson unveils new TH-66 Sage to meet US Army training requirement

May 27, 2025

Robinson say that the R66 offers significant advantages as the US Army’s next rotorcraft trainer, and is offering a dedicated variant, provisionally named as the TH-66 Sage. This does not fit Army Helicopter naming conventions, since there has already been an H-66 (the Boeing–Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche) and there is no Indian tribe called ‘Sage’ (there is an Osage tribe, and indeed a Hughes TH-55 Osage helicopter).
Designed for real-world training, the R66 exceeds the Army’s demanding training requirements and promises to ensure a smooth transfer of skills to operational environments. Inside the aircraft, the R66 incorporates the company’s signature instructor-friendly cyclic design, providing enhanced instructor oversight for improved control and safety in the learning environment.
Advanced Garmin G500H TXi and GTN750 avionics are integrated, providing enhanced situational awareness and facilitating the transfer of ‘digital cockpit habits’ to advanced training and operational helicopter types. The intuitive engine controls include a power turbine governor and twist-grip throttle, which simplifies engine management, and this is crucial for effective training. The R66 helicopter also comes equipped with an integrated 4k cockpit camera as standard, further enhancing safety and debriefing.
The company says that the Robinson R66 has consistently shown the lowest acquisition and lowest direct operating cost (DOC) and most advanced safety features in its class and will offer a dependable and affordable training solution for the Army’s IERW (Initial Entry Rotary Wing) requirement.
The R66 is the only American-designed and manufactured helicopter in its class, and through its use of a vertically integrated manufacturing system, Robinson has ensured that more than 85% of all R66 parts are made in its Torrance, California manufacturing facility. This American-made philosophy ensures consistent parts availability and the highest quality.
David Smith, president and CEO of the Robinson Helicopter Company said that: “The R66 embodies American-made readiness, built with reliability, quality, and durability at its core, and we are committed to providing seamless American-made support. Pilots worldwide learn critical power management skills and achieve true flight readiness in a Robinson aircraft. This foundation prepares them exceptionally well for future operational demands.”
