GKN Aerospace has unveiled a new state-of-the-art repair facility in San Diego, California, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion of its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities.

The $55 million investment adds a 150,000-square-foot facility to its existing operations in the region, effectively doubling its MRO capacity.

Positioned next to its established engines site, the new facility is equipped with cutting-edge automation and robotics technologies. These tools are set to enhance the reliability of repair services, improve efficiency, and reduce turnaround times for a range of engine components.

Among the highlights of its capabilities are repair solutions for current and next-generation engines, including the GE LEAP and Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan models, as well as legacy platforms.

The San Diego facility will serve over 400 customers worldwide, spanning both civil and military aviation sectors.

With an expanded focus on innovation and efficiency, it positions GKN Aerospace to better meet the demands of modern engine maintenance and repair.

The facility’s increased capacity is complemented by plans for workforce growth; the company’s existing team of 900 employees in San Diego is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

Joakim Andersson, president of Engine Systems, said: “We are incredibly proud to open this new state-of-the-art facility and to share this milestone with our customers, employees, and stakeholders.

“This significant investment brings the latest automated manufacturing technologies to our business, while emphasising our commitment to our customers in North America and helping to meet the growing demand for MRO in the region.

“We appreciate the support of the local government and community in making San Diego the ideal location for this facility.”
