British Airways leaks new Airbus A380 seat map with the largest business class cabin in the world

British Airways briefly published its new Airbus A380 seat configuration, featuring 110 Club World seats—the largest business class cabin on any aircraft.

British Airways’ long-awaited new Airbus A380 cabins will feature 110 business class seats, more than any other aircraft flying. The airline inadvertently published the seat map of its soon-to-be reconfigured superjumbos on its website last week. (Whether it was an IT snafu or clever guerrilla marketing strategy is anybody’s guess.)

While the errant seat map has since been taken down, it was up long enough for many industry watchers to take note of major changes to capacity and the location of passenger accommodation (LOPA).

British Airways’ A380 will finally get Club Suites

The British Airways A380 refurbishment program is set to begin in the second quarter of this year. The refitted British Airways A380 will be equipped with Club Suites, which are already flying on the airline’s long-haul fleet, including the Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s, as well as many of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

These suites are built on the Collins Elevation seat platform and customised, including a privacy screen door and acoustic lining to dampen cabin noise. Centre suites have a sliding divider screen between them, providing privacy for solo travellers while also allowing couples to share the space.

British Airways’ new A380 cabin layout sacrifices capacity for higher revenue seating

One of the most important changes British Airways has made to the A380 cabin is increasing the number of premium seats at the expense of overall aircraft capacity.

  • British Airways will dedicate the entire upper deck of the superjumbo to its Club World business class, with 110 seats in all
  • On the main deck, the airline will have:
    • 12 new first class suites
    • 84 premium economy seats.
    • 215 economy seats

That brings the total seating capacity of the British Airways A380 to 421, down from the current 469, which includes:

  • 14 first class seats,
  • 97 business class seats,
  • 55 premium economy seats,
  • 303 economy class seats

Interestingly, British Airways has reallocated the aircraft cabin footprint at both ends of the seating spectrum, reducing two first class suites and 88 economy class seats to make room for a greater number of revenue-generating premium economy and business class passengers.

BA’s new A380 first class may require a larger cabin footprint

The reduction of capacity in British Airways’ first class may be due to the space requirements of its new A380 First Suite.

The airline unveiled its new A380 first class in 2024, promising a “a game changing” new suite with a 36.5”-wide seat, and a bed length of 79”.  It also features a multi-purpose ottoman, a 32” 4K TV screen, a 60” curved wall for privacy and abundant personal storage space, eliminating the need for overhead bins in this cabin.

The airline may also have determined that there is a higher likelihood of selling more premium economy seats than first class, reducing two First suites to make more room for these happy middle cabin products onboard.

BA continues to bet big on business class

British Airways’ current A380 cabin already leads the industry in business class capacity, with 97 Club World seats across two decks.

For comparison:

  • Most of Emirates’ A380 variants have 76 business class seats. The high-density (two-class) A380 currently flying has 58. The newly reconfigured high-density A380 will have three classes, including premium economy, and 76 business class seats.
  • Etihad Airways’ A380s have 70 business class seats
  • Lufthansa’s A380s have 78 business class seats, though the recently announced cabin reconfiguration will reduce these to 68
  • Singapore Airlines’ A380s have 78 business class seats
  • Qantas’ A380s have 70 business seats
  • Qatar Airways’ A380s have 48 business class seats

Adding 13 more seats in Club World reflects the airline’s focused strategy on attracting corporate flyers. Its additional 29 premium economy seats will appeal to corporate flyers with travel budget constraints and leisure flyers who want a bit more comfort on long-haul flights without paying too high a fare.
